Sports are a great source of exercise and entertainment. Roughly three-quarters of families living in the U.S., who have school-aged children, have at least one child who plays in an organized sport. Others participate in recreational activities such as inline skating and skateboarding. Sports are a great social activity that promotes leadership skills including respect, patience, and teamwork. Sports also pose a risk for injury. Each year more than 3.5 million children age 14 and under suffer sports-related injuries that require medical attention. The sports industry is taking an active role in injury prevention by supporting the use of protective equipment, providing safer playing environments, and enforcing rules designed to prevent injury.
