Unintentional firearm injuries and fatalities involve complex issues and affect hundreds of children and families in the United States. This preventable injury takes the lives of one U.S. child or teen every three hours. In California, the number of intentional firearm-related injuries and fatalities is greater than unintentional firearm-related injuries and fatalities. However, they both have the potential for deadly consequences. Firearms can be lethal and must be handled with safety and precaution. Parents and caregivers who choose to keep or store firearms in the home, need to keep each firearm locked and unloaded. Firearms and ammunition should always be stored and locked away in separate locations.
