Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the largest category of Sudden Unexplained Infant Deaths (SUID) and is the third leading cause of infant deaths. SIDS is defined as the sudden death of an infant less than a year old that cannot be explained after a thorough investigation is conducted, including a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and review of the clinical history (CDC, 2008). SIDS cases are difficult to identify and monitor due to the lack of consensus regarding diagnostic criteria and reporting guidelines. Studies have identified some risk factors associated with SIDS and other unexplained infant deaths. Risk factors include placing infants to sleep on their stomach or side, use of soft bedding, low birth weight, younger maternal age, mothers with less formal education, maternal depression, and lower socioeconomic status.
As a result, the “Back to Sleep” Campaign was launched in the United States in 1994 and resulted in a major decrease in SIDS deaths. Additional prevention messages include encouraging parents and caregivers to keep their baby’s sleeping environment free from toys and fluffy blankets, and avoid co-sleeping or sleeping adjacent to their child, particularly when extremely tired or while taking medications.
