Fire and burn-related injuries are the forth leading cause of injury-related deaths among children ages one to four in California. In 2006, 892 cases of fire and burn-related injuries among children in California under the age of 18 were hospitalized and an additional 23 cases resulted in fatalities. Unlike many residential injuries, fires and burns have a range of causes, from a simple act of leaving the hot bath water running to forgetting to unplug an iron, to falling asleep with a lit cigarette or candle. Luckily most burns can be prevented.
The most effective way to prevent a residential fire is to install a working smoke alarm near sleeping and cooking areas. Other safety precautions include covering electrical outlets, installing fire extinguishers in areas such as the kitchen and garage, removing matches and lighters from locations where young children have access, and developing a family safety plan for escape in case a fire breaks out.
