Bicycling continues to be the leading cause of emergency department visits for many children and adolescents. Factors such as the lack of bike paths that separate children from traffic, inattentive drivers, and very low use of bicycle helmets all contribute to bicycle hazards. To improve bicycle safety, it is important to promote the use of bicycle helmets, support bicycle training opportunities, encourage parental supervision of young children, and raise awareness of the need for bicycle friendly communities.
