California Injury Prevention Network

The California Injury Prevention Network (CIPN) website is a unique collection of resources for both new and experienced professionals in childhood injury prevention. CIPN uses the Social-Ecological Model, the Core Competencies for Injury and Violence Prevention, and the Spectrum of Prevention theoretical model to guide users in enhancing fundamental skills such as program development, advocacy, and evaluation. CIPN also offers a community exchange forum for CIPN members to meet others in the field of childhood injury prevention, ask questions of other injury prevention professionals, and learn from each other’s experiences.

Background

Several years ago, many of California’s injury prevention constituents participated in a training needs assessment survey. The results showed that they were interested in web-based training to provide state-of-the-art information about injury prevention practices. Because so many were a “one-person shop”, participants were also looking for ways to feel connected to others doing this important work. Additionally, they wanted training on leadership development.

As a first step, the California Kids’ Plates Program contracted with the San Francisco Department of Public Health to help conceptualize and initiate the CIPN website. CIPN has since grown to become the “go-to” resource to promote professional growth and leadership skills through ongoing trainings, networking, and partnership development.
